Sarah Rands (3) Fluency

Quote: "Researchers report that the big difference between students who identify words effectively and those who don't is whether they survey the letters in the words and analyze interior components."

Comment: This quote reminded me of what Dr. Wimmer talked about in class. Often we as readers do not realize the analyzing we do as we read. When we are reading, we unconsciously look ahead to see if it is a question, or who is saying it. We try to observe and analyze as we read. Young readers begin to do the same thing as they identify words and survey them correctly.

Question: How can we help our students to survey and analyze words more effectively to produce students who can identify with words and ultimately become more fluent?

  1. I think if we take the time to teach the importance of analyzing the words they are coming across then we will teach our students the need to identify and break down words and not to simply breeze through them. Students will see a greater importance on things that we place a greater importance on. So, if we teach them that analysis is important then they will begin to internalize that.
