Brittany Hammond (4) Funds of Knowledge

Quote: "How do we transform out students' funds of knowledge in classroom settings? Teachers can mediate classroom experiences for their students, bringing in a host of cultural experience from their students' funds of knowledge, and they can meet their students halfway with a shared space in which both can participate." (Pahl, pg. 121)

Comment: This quote stuck out to me because of the part that says we meet our students halfway. I think it's really important to acknowledge that our students come from very different backgrounds. With 25 different backgrounds in the classroom we can't possibly think that the way we like things done is the way they learn. We need to understand them as a person and learn to incorporate who they are into our lessons and classrooms. Only through meeting them halfway is true learning possible.

Question: What is the best way to incorporate the children's cultures when they may all be so different? How do we do this at the beginning of the year when we are only just getting to know them?

  1. Have a get to know you day at school where you allow each student to share something unique about themselves or their culture. You could also do home visits before class starts depending on the area you live to let your students know you care about them and than you would better be able to understand them and their culture by seeing the environment they live in.
