Comment: I liked this idea of having the students bring in artifacts that represent them, because it creates a sense of community, a sense of ownership of the room, and helps them make meaning with their texts. Kids are going to make inferences and draw conclusions about texts based on their own discourse, so it's important to identify those discourses. I think having the kids establish who they are will help them become better writers, too, as they understand that writers write from what they know and who they are.
Question: On page 105 of Pahl, she describes some ways to bring the kids' identities into the classroom (reading logs, disposable cameras to take home, bring in artifacts from home). Can you think of any more ways to bring that sense of identity into the classroom and then use that during literacy time?
