"As teachers plan for instruction, they need to consider what students already know about the word. Sometimes the word is unfamiliar, or it represents a new concept. At other times, the word is familiar and students know one meaning, but they need to leanr a new meaning" (Tompkins, 241)
I think it is important as teachers to keep this in mind when we are giving students new vocabulary words. Not every student is going to be at the same level, specially if we have ESL students in our classroom. It is necessary to keep in mind everyone's level and explained each word as necessary.
What are some word-study activities you remember doing in your elementary school?
In 6th grade we played a vocab game every fri. called blurb (or something like that). Two people would be given a word that we had learned that week and we had to describe it to our team by either giving the definition or an example. It was a race between two teams. It was fun! Also putting words on flash cards is helpful to me.
