Quote: "...students' mastery of traditional literacy skills is weak not because they lack the basic cognitive abilities to become literate but because the literacy instruction they experienced throughout their schooling failed to ignite any significant degree of identity investment in school-based literacy" (Pahl, 142).
Comment: When students can connect with the texts that they read, the reading becomes enjoyable. They develop an intrinsic motivation to read, rather than because the reading is an assignment. The challenge for teachers then becomes how to help students connect to the texts, and use the text to change or conform with their identity.
Question: How can teachers help students to enjoy the school-based texts that they are required to read?
