Jenaca Jett (3) Assessment

Quote: "Assessment has become a priority in the 21st century schools. School districts and state and federal education agencies have increased their demands for accountability, and today, most students take annual high-stakes tests to judge their achievement. Teachers are collecting more assessment data now, and doing it more frequently than in the past."

Comment: Assessments are very important in school. They provide teachers with data and information they need to understand how well children use skills and their level of understanding. This gives teachers the opportunity to make appropriate adjustments to their teaching if a majority of the students are not understanding.

Question: What are some ways that teacher can have assessments without having the students take tests? How can the teacher cater to the different ways that children learn... because some children aren't good test takers?

  1. I love that assessment doesn't have to mean tests! It can mean students draw a diagram or make an outline. Students can present to the class or to the teacher, the class can have a discussion. There are so many possibilities and you can do all kinds so that you reach many learners. I like when teachers can assess without the students feeling the pressure of being assessed. I don't think that they always need to know they are being evaluated so using simple informal assessments frequently can be a more comfortable environment than formal tests all the time.
