Quote: "Authentic reading and writing activities are the best ways to practice high-frequency words because these common words are likely to be used often."
Comment: Students should learn the words that they see often before any other. These are the foundation of their vocabulary. When students learn the words that they encounter often, their practice will also be genuine and useful. Students will be able to relate what they are learning to what they have read in the past. Students will see why they must learn what they are learning, and be more engaged in the activities.
Question: What ways can we incorporate what students are already reading into the classroom and curriculum, providing them with this authentic experience?
Like the reading said these high frequency words are more likely to be in what students are reading. So they will likely be already familiar with these. By giving students free time to read whatever they wish to read they will continue to be familiarized with these words. Also by giving students a chance to share what they are reading with the class and give recommendations to their peers they feel a sense of ownership of their learning.
