Quote: "Portfolios are systematic and meaningful collections of artifacts documenting students' literacy development over time. These collections are dynamic and reflect students day-to-day reading and writing activities as well as content-area activities. Students' work samples provide "windows" on the strategies they use as readers and writers. Not only do students select pieces to be placed in their portfolios, they also learn to establish criteria for their selections. Because of students' involvement in selecting pieces for their portfolios and reflecting on them, portfolio assessment respects students and their abilities."
Comment: I really liked this idea. I feel like this would be one of the ways we could create a democratic classroom like we talked about in Management. I like that the focus is on success and that students get to choose their own pieces. To choose these pieces students must reflect on what they have done well enough to display and what they could do better.
Question: What are some ideas that you got for portfolios as you read this? Some of mine were having gold folders with red ribbon closures and putting them in special display cases. I wanted mine to have a very special feel so students would be very proud.
What a great idea... this is a great way to see a child's development in reading and writing while also giving them fun projects that they will enjoy and will be excited to share with the class.
ReplyDeleteA fun idea of something the students can put in their portfolio is an independent reading project. Have the students choose a book to read on their reading level and have them select two or three people your character would think of as a hero or superhero. Describe the characteristics of the heroes and why those characteristics would be important to your character. On white sheet of paper give the students an opportunity to create and color the characters they made. This will help them to be creative and enjoy thinking outside the box!
