Quote: "Identity breathes life into literacy."
Comment: I absolutely love the idea that integrating a child's personality into the things they are reading helps them! Not just integrating their personality and background so that they can relate but listening to their independent views and allowing those views to bring the text to life! It just sounds fantastic and makes me so excited to apply this idea and perspective in my classroom.
Question: What are your thoughts on that quote? Do you believe that it would be beneficial for students to associate their lives with the text and allow their points of view to bring life to the text?
I think students absolutely need to relate the text to their lives. If students see no similarity or need for a text you start to lose them. In regards to making their own text, it's important to write what you know. Trying to write about something you've never seen or done is extremely difficult and just leads to frustration in my opinion.
