Janet Leishman (3) Literacy Practices

Quote: "Hope that children of tomorrow will be given space to learn in a pedagogical setting which respects their literacy practices, and affords them instruction which draws on those practices (Pahl 135)."

Comment: Students need to be part of an environment where they are not only learning academic skills but also social skills. Social skills not only involve the skills needed in creating relationships with other students but also the social skills of living in the present world. The world today is full of technology and problem solving type situations. As teachers, we need to teach our students how to live in this world, which means that we need to teach them how to work with technology and how to solve real life type problems on their own. These skills are vital skills to acquire. In the quote about it explains that one day the students may be 'given a space' (the classroom) 'to learn in a pedagogical setting which respects their literacy practices'. I think of the students literacy practices as the things that they do outside of the classroom, which involve comprehension and/or language. These things may include texting, emailing, web surfing, etc. As a teacher, we can provide our students with a space to learn about their current literacy practices. It may take more time, work and effort on our part but in the end, the students will learn skills that they need to live in this world.

Question: What are some ways that teachers can allow students to help them create a classroom where the students literacy practices are explored more?

  1. In our TELL classes and our IP&T class, I believe we've been allowed to explore more literacy practices. In my TELL class, half of the class was electronic, so my homework involved watching youtube videos, listening to talks, and completing online assignments. In IP&T we are to complete assignments online, using different features available online. I think that if we implement technologies such as these to our classrooms, we will give our students a chance to have a multimodal education. These techniques allow students to embrace technology and advancing resources, which in turn, allows them to become more literate with outside of school activities. Through expanding our teaching to involve technology, we will be able to reach more students in different ways.
