Quote: "As they monitor children's learning, teachers learn about their students, about themselves as teachers, and about the impact of the instructional program."
Comment: I think sometimes assessments have the stigma of being a one time test that are meant to assess what children know about a particular subject. If they don't do well, it's assumed they don't really know a lot, but if they do well we think, "that's great!" and move on. But it's important to realize that assessment should be something that is continuous and thoughtful. All types of assessments can be used not only to see what children know, but what mistakes they make, where their knowledge is lacking, where instructional practices could be better, etc. It is so important to see every child has a learning being, and use assessments to inform you how to better teach these children all they need to know. Sometimes teaching practices and programs have to be altered, but we need to realize that's okay and we can develop ourselves as teachers to become better.
Question: How can we tell the difference what the students simply aren't grasping or what we aren't teaching effectively? What are the signs that teaching practices need to be revamped?
I agree! I think that it is so important that as teachers we don't just test and move on. We should take the information about the test and either help each student understand what they got wrong...or if every student got something wrong on the test then clearly we did not teach that subject/topic good enough. As teachers we need to be humble and realize that sometimes it is our teaching that needs to be improved. Bad test scores I feel tell more about the teachers teaching then the students learning.
