Lindsey Draper (4) Students' Comprehension

Qoute: "Children learn to convert letters into sounds and blend them to recognize words. Those who can apply phonics concepts can use decoding strategies to figure out unfamiliar written words."

Comment: In the last class we talked about how studies have shown that it is better to let children spell words by how they sound rather then with their proper spelling. This qoute shows how this strategy can help children. But I can't help but think that this can still be a little confusing for the child. Is this a case where the good effects outway the bad so it is said to be effective?

Question: How can we use this strategy to help children read? How do we know the child is ready to learn the proper spelling?
