Comment: I really like how in this quote it helps to outline the teachers role beyond just correcting a students writing. A students confidence in their writing is just as important as their grammar. You can be given all the tools needed to to paint a picture, but without the confidence to pick them up and try the student will never grow. The quote also mentions that a teacher should serve as a model for the correct and appropriate reactions to students writings. This part confuses me, do they mean that you shouldn't comment on certain aspects of writing?
Question: What do you think Thompkins means when he talks about the teacher serving as a model for the class in reference to commenting on a students work? Do they mean that they should "sugar coat" commentary or be gentle?
I do not think sugar coating helps at all. I would suggest that the teacher exemplify giving helpful criticism at the appropriate times and also giving positive feedback for things done well. For instance if proof reading one anothers paper students should point out things to improve and also things done well.
