Lene Kristine Botolfsen - Sec.4 - Texts as artifacts

Quote:
"Viewing the texts children use and make in class in this light gives them a far deeper understanding of genre, of design, of editing and of language than restricting literacy to balancing phonics instruction with whole language. On the whole, children understand by doing and by using symbolic practices - whether with image, music or written text - and understanding texts as artifacts of practices facilitates a more meaningful engagement with language."

Comment:
I think it is important to look beyond the obvious text as books, and incorporate all sorts of text into our teaching literacy. As teachers, we need to include the children, what they are interested in, and how they view text. It is important to teach them all aspects of text, what it means, how it's built up, and its influence on audience.

Question:
If there are children in the class that have little to no experience with different types of text, how to we introduce them to some of the things the other students have experienced without leaving those students bored and unengaged? By different types of text I mean, movies, video games, magazines etc.
