Caitlin Walton-Motivation (3)

Quote: "A number of these scholars have cautioned, however, that in order for students to develop into mature, effective readers they must possess both the skill and the will to read."
Comment: I love this quote because it relates to what we talked about with scholarly readers and real readers. It is important for students not to just read what they need for school or what they think the teacher will put on the test. Rather, it is important for students to have the self-motivation to read for themselves because that is when they will truly learn and absorb what they are reading. I think that the teacher plays a huge role in kindling this love for reading in children. My Children's Lit teacher said over and over again that it is the teacher's attitude towards reading and books that will make children love or dread them.
Question: What are some ways that we, as teachers, can show our children how much we love reading and help them to love diving into books as well?

  1. My post was about this subject too! I realized that motivating students to read has to do with us creating the environment for them to choose to read. In the article it talked about having a place in the classroom that's designated for reading. Also having a lot of variety of books for kids to choose from and to know that the teacher values books enough to have them in her classroom. So I think a lot of it has to do with the environment, both the physical and the attitude we adopt. When the children are surrounded by this type of environment, it will be more likely they'll find their own notch in reading that they will love.
