Quote: "In addition, we need to pay attention to the complex blend of new and old media , which are central to the everyday experience of the everyday cultures of childhood and adolescence. Like it or not, textual practices such as email, online shopping, webcams, messaging and games using avatars online are part of young people's realities. It is time to take these forms into our schools and use them." (Pahl, 71)
Comment: I think that it is very important for us to connect literacy to what our students are doing everyday at home. If we can show them that they use literacy in their everyday practices, in their facebook posting and their twitter tweets, we can help students realize the importance of literacy and motivate them to become more literate.
Question: How can we integrate our students at home technology literacy into the classroom?
I think that one way we can incorporate it is by having them create blogs about certain subjects that we as teachers assign. I think that a blog like this would be appropriate for an elementary school class too because so many young children are getting into these kinds of things at younger and younger ages. This is something that would be interesting to them because it relates to the kinds of things they're already doing, such as facebook. They can create a profile and give their own ideas in a blog.
