Kylee Openshaw (3) Children's Texts Go To School

Quote: "Children's identities can often be expressed throught their text-making. These identities shift in relation to the different ways children feel about the subject of their drawing and writing. ...interest in a text leads to meaning (68)."
Comment: This chapter focused on realizing that students bring their home, background, cultural, and personal interest experiences into the classroom with them, and these things influence each child's personal literacy. Students create connections and meaning between things that they are familiar with or that interest them and what they are learning. As teachers it is important to realize this, and to help children use these connections to enhance their learning.
Question: How much should teachers encourage poplular culture within the classroom if children connect to it, and it motivates them to practice different types of literacy?

  1. I think that teachers should try to incorporate a lot of popular culture into the classroom. I think that by doing so the teacher will be able to better relate to the students. I also think that by incorporating popular culture into the classroom students won't complain much about learning; because the teacher is relating school work to what is interesting to the students (which would create motivation).
